Subject ~ Object ~ Subject: Returning Your Energy to the Present Moment

Have you ever noticed how quickly your mood can shift when something “out there” rattles you?

A text message, a headline, a sideways comment—and suddenly your heart is pounding, your thoughts are racing, and you’re no longer at ease inside your own skin.

That’s the pull of Object—the outer world—grabbing our attention and hijacking our energy.

🌿 What’s Happening in the Body

When we lock our focus on an external trigger (object), the nervous system interprets it as a potential threat.

The hypothalamus signals the pituitary gland, which tells the adrenal glands to release stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline.

This “fight-flight” response is brilliant for short bursts of true danger. Your heart rate rises, blood pressure increases, muscles tense, and glucose floods the bloodstream to provide quick energy.

But when we stay in this state for long periods—hours, days, even weeks—our body, mind and soul connections pay a heavy price:

Physical Effects – chronically elevated cortisol can disrupt sleep, weaken the immune system, upset digestion, and contribute to inflammation, fatigue, and hormone imbalance.

Mental & Emotional Effects – the prefrontal cortex (our clear-thinking, problem-solving center) goes offline while the amygdala (fear center) takes over. This leaves us anxious, reactive, and unable to access intuition or creativity.

Spiritual Effects – constant outer focus scatters our life-force energy. We feel cut off from inner guidance, forgetting the calm, wise Self that exists beneath the noise.

This is why self-regulation is not just a mental exercise—it’s a whole-body, whole-being practice.

💫 Shifting from Object Back to Subject

There is a simple practice called Subject ~ Object ~ Subject which interrupts this loop.

It means noticing when your attention is consumed by the outer world (object), pausing, and returning awareness to the inner world (subject).

It sounds simple, maybe too simple. But it’s powerful because it trains the nervous system to find balance again and, it works.

Here’s a Four-Step Practice to Return to Subject

Recognize the Trigger
Become self-aware enough to admit, My ego is activated. I’m reacting.

Pause and Breathe
One slow inhale through the nose, one longer exhale through the mouth.
This single breath stimulates the vagus nerve and shifts you toward a calmer, parasympathetic state.

Observe Without Judgment
Imagine stepping slightly outside yourself:
Hmm, interesting. My chest is tight. My mind is spinning.
Observation creates space between the event and your reaction.

Choose Your Response
From this grounded place, you’re free to act, speak, or stay silent—without stress hormones steering the ship.

🌸 Daily Practice

Set a gentle reminder on your phone a few times a day.
When it goes off, check in:

Where is my attention—on object (outer) or subject (inner)?

Can I take one nourishing breath and bring my energy back home?

With regular practice, you’ll notice a shift.
Your nervous system begins to trust that it’s safe to relax.
Your energy stops scattering outward.
And you become the calm center of your own experience—no matter what’s happening around you.

Where attention goes, energy flows.
Bring it back to subject, and you’ll feel your whole system soften and brighten.
